TRANSAVIA, designated Champion of Sustainable Development for responsible production and consumption

Bucharest, January 11, 2024. TRANSAVIA, the leader of Romania's poultry sector, was designated as a Sustainable Development Champion, winning the section for commercial companies, regardless of their field of activity, in the category of „responsible production and consumption”.

The award, granted by the Department for Sustainable Development (DDD) within the Romanian Government, was presented to the company's representatives during the Sustainable Development Gala on January 2, 2024.

In the field of responsible production and consumption„ The use of production methods that do not increase the negative impact on the environment and society, the observance of decent work principles, and responsible consumption behaviors were appreciated and rewarded.

„We pride ourselves on being a company that doesn't just talk about supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, but We demonstrate this commitment through concrete actions. In the last decade We have invested more than a quarter of a billion euros, from our own funds, in the development and modernization of production facilities, in advanced technologies that allow us to be the most efficient in the sector and to reduce our carbon footprint. We have implemented sustainable agricultural practices to protect biodiversity and we pay special attention to the welfare of our animals. We pride ourselves on our internationally recognized certifications and on the largest investment in renewable energy in the food industry in Romania, which next year will allow us to secure up to 100% of our required energy from our own sources.

We receive this award both as recognition of our efforts and as an impulse, an increased motivation to continue on this path. We thank our dedicated team, our partners, and above all, those who choose our products from store shelves, thus sharing and supporting our vision for a more sustainable future.”, declares Theodora Popa, Vice President of TRANSAVIA.

TRANSAVIA's performance in the field of sustainability can be tracked in Sustainability reports prepared in accordance with GRI standards, which the company, the only one in the sector, has been transparently publishing since 2019.

Total control over product safety and quality—as well as environmental impact—is possible because this family-owned business, with 100% Romanian capital, operates under a model that is unique in the region, being truly 100% vertically integrated. At the same time, through the „ZERO waste” policy, all nearly 2,400 employees take care of resources, doing things exactly right every day, from seed to fork.

TRANSAVIA is the only chicken meat producer in Romania that produces, raises, and processes all chickens exclusively in its own facilities, thus being able to guarantee the quality and safety of all offered products. The company owns breeding and hatchery farms, rearing farms, slaughterhouses, a processing plant, and its own fleet for product transport.

The quality of TRANSAVIA’s products is an integral part of the company’s sustainability strategy, and a key element in fulfilling this commitment is healthy feed and proper nutrition for chicks. In the 100% vertically integrated production chain, from the bowl to the fork, only chickens raised in our own facilities are processed, fed with grains produced on the over 10,000 hectares cultivated in our own vegetable farms. The harvest is processed in our own Compound Feed Factory, thus ensuring daily fresh feed for the breeding and reproduction farms.

TRANSAVIA recently inaugurated the most modern protein meal plant, thanks to which all by-products not intended for human consumption are processed and used, producing virtually no waste. Similarly, the company ensures that sludge from its own wastewater treatment plants and litter from breeding farms are used, after appropriate technological preparation, as natural fertilizer in crop farms. Thus, the company significantly reduces the use of chemical fertilizers and protects biodiversity.

TRANSAVIA is the only 100% Romanian-owned company that has committed to the standards of being a co-signatory of the EU Code of Conduct on Responsible Food Business and Marketing Practices.

The sustainable development champions in the field of „responsible production and consumption,” winners of this edition, have carried out successful projects that highlight the connection between the „consumption and production” field and sustainable development through at least one of the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 7 (energy), SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), SDG 9 (industry, innovation, infrastructure), SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities), SDG 12 (consumption and production), SDG 17 (international partnerships). To designate the five „champions” running successful projects in the field of „responsible production and consumption,” the expert jury considered the collaborative nature of the projects, the public benefit they bring, creativity, replicability, and project visibility, as well as the capacity to generate continuity.

The competition represents an initiative through which the Department for Sustainable Development (DDD) within the Government of Romania aims to identify organizations that demonstrate attention to society's sensitive issues and carry out actions in the field of sustainability. The 5 Champions who received trophies operate in the fields of NGOs, schools, universities, public administration, and commercial companies.

The competition is part of a broad awareness and information program regarding the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set out in the 2030 Agenda.
