The chicken meat producer TRANSAVIA has invested 35 million euros from its own funds in the largest renewable energy project in Romania's food industry. Following this investment, the company will entirely cover its energy needs from its own sources. Future plans are just as ambitious: in 3-4 years, production capacity is expected to reach a new record level for Southeast Europe. How? Through massive investments in expanding and streamlining operations, as well as through acquisitions of new market players, states Ioan Popa, president and founder of TRANSAVIA.
From grain to fork is the strategy on which TRANSAVIA was built, the leader of the local chicken meat market, one of the largest family businesses, which owns and produces the chicken meat brand Fragedo and chicken-based semi-prepared products Papane. Specifically, it controls the entire production and supply chain, from cultivating the feed with which the birds are fed, the entire production process, and up to the final form in which the products reach the shelf. Now, the company is also becoming energy independent.
Started in 2022, the project involved the commissioning of a high-efficiency combined heat and power plant and the installation, across all TRANSAVIA work locations, of approximately 30 hectares of photovoltaic panels. This investment in green energy will provide up to 100% of the electricity required for production processes and will also support the annual elimination of 18 million kg of CO2, the equivalent of annually planting a 900-hectare forest (841,000 trees / year). „In addition to this massive investment of 35 million euros from our own funds, this year we also have other major investments directed toward a new state-of-the-art, fully automated processing line, which will allow us to double our chicken meat processing capacity into value-added products, toward the construction of new halls for raising chickens, and the construction of a new grain storage base. At the same time, we have focused on sustainability by developing a new high-performance protein meal plant that contributes to the circularity of the by-products resulting from our technological processes,” says Ioan Popa, president and founder of TRANSAVIA. He also states that this year he has relied on strategic investments that strengthen the company's position at the regional level, such as the one in renewable energy, in modernizations, technological upgrades, and the increase of production capacities, as well as in terms of sustainability.
