TRANSAVIA, one of the largest chicken meat producers in Romania, with 120,000 tons per year, is the protagonist of episode 14 of the campaign „Second life. Models of circular economy”. The campaign is being carried out by the Sustainable Solutions Association together with the environmental consulting firm Stratos. The video report shows how the policy works. „Zero Loss” For the company: everything that results from an activity becomes raw material for the next one. Its own protein meal plant processes 150 tons of waste from slaughterhouses daily, such as feathers and viscera, and produces 30–40 tons of protein meal and fats, which are sold abroad to animal feed producers and for biodiesel. „You can neutralize it, but […] you only have one expense, which is enormous. By doing this, besides recovering all our energy costs, we also bring added value”, explains Toader Popa, Director of the TRANSAVIA Industrialization Division.
The circuit continues at the vegetable farms in Aiton, Cluj County, where approximately 10,000 hectares are cultivated with cereals for the birds’ feed. The waste from the chicken farms and, since 2021, the sludge from the six own wastewater treatment plants are used as organic fertilizer, which reduces the consumption of chemical fertilizers by up to 70%. „On the field where we started conducting the agrochemical study, from 2011 to now, and using natural fertilizer, we have noticed an increase in production of over 40% compared to conventional fertilizer,”, say Adrian Farcaș, Director of the Vegetal Sector of TRANSAVIA. The beaches become a nesting place for birds, and the seed shells are reintroduced into agriculture, so that 99% of the waste is utilized.
